Reservation or not to Reservation
After conferring with the Alfa hotel they can book reservations for Saturday and Sunday for 10 people, regardless how many we actually have which I believe will be 7 in our party. I don’t mind spending a bit extra but would this be the preferred way to go you think? I e-mailed them back asking as to which beer tents were available. Also, given a choice if we were to purchase reservations which tent would be the most ideal?

Tent reservations are always good if you can get them, especially with a large group like 7-10. Trying to get seats on your own, on the weekend, with that many people will be tough.
Go for it if you can, always nice to have guaranteed seating on a weekend.
Our favorite tents are , in no particular order:
- Paulaner
- Augustiner
- Lowenbrau
- Pschorr Brausol

Any of those look like good opportunities. Here's some info on the tents themselves...

Just another comment. Be sure to go to a tent and try to get seated in the general open seating area. While it will be difficult because of the size of your group, that is where the fun and action really are. It's the best way to meet new people. I don't know where we would be today without the Nigerian gay hookers or Polish newspaper reporter. Keep you eyes open and you may even see Nude Table Surfing (a topic for a different post).
Thanks for the input! I see that reservations are for galerie/balcony and box seats. I guess that is not what we are looking for... I will look around.
I would suggest taking at least one of the reservations. The box seats are typically on the lower floor, arounbd the outside of the main area. These are better than balcony because you are closer to the activity.
It is always nice to walk in, have your seat ready, and not need to fight for a place. But again, the mayhem on the main floor area is what Oktoberfest is all about.
-Sorry for the delayed response.... been on vacation.
I think having a reservation eliminates a bunch of hassle getting into the tents and finding a seat. That said, while a big group may need to break up, do try to get in the mix in the middle of the floor at least once. You could use your reserved table as a base camp, and send out expeditions. ;-) It can get pretty crazy, but it will be worth it.
Is it reasonably possible to get into one of the tents at say 3pm on a Friday with seven people without reservations or don’t even try??
Getting in should not be a problem. It will definately take effort to get everyone seated together.
That is good to hear. I was afraid that we would be outside the entire time because we did not have seats. And far as sitting together, most of the videos I have seen on Youtub show many more standing than sitting. Is there a place to walk up and buy a beer or must they be delivered by a waitress? Sorry for all the questions...
No problem... you'll be better prepared.
In most of the tents, I can't recall a place to go up to and get a beer. The waitresses come to your table. You should be able to squeeze 3 people into 3 different tables, then eventually work your selves into all being at one of them. Good communication is key. ;-)
As always, BarleyMan is right on. I know of no tent where you can go up to a bar and order a bier. You must be at a table. With that said, if you have abier, you can certainly walk around with one.
Chugger is right. You only can order a beer when you are in the area of tables and seats.
