Join us as we plan and document our travels to the land of pork products and the golden nectar; Oktoberfest. Enjoy as we experience a World Class Event full of fun, frivolity and Gemütlichkeit.
Here's the countdown to the start of Oktoberfest 2025...
My buddies and I plan on going to Rothenburg ob der Tauber on the Saturday we are there. Should we reserve one in advance and if so is there any place you would recommend? I saw there we quite a few in the area.
As usual, BarleyMan is correct, we have never rented a car. It appears to be about 240km, which might be about 2.5 hours. Taking the train is about 2.5 - 3 hours and you don't need to worry about drinking and driving.
You could leave at 6:52 and be there at 9:49. The return trip could leave at 16:06 with arrival in Munchen at 19:34.

Just to cover my bases I reserved a 4 or 5 passenger car for $120. The rail may be the way to go but options are the key to happiness. Besides Alkoholische is our DD with the international driver’s licenses.
Chugger, Not to worry. I have to be responsible for one day. My wife is much more willing to let me take these trips than Betrunken's. If I have to suffer for one day of being DD but it allows me to take more trips with my friend and brother in law, I will take one for the team. IT IS FOR A GREATER GOOD!!!!
The good news is that Rothenburg isn't as beer focused as Munich. You may be able to resist and maintain purity of essence. The only beer I can remember having in Rothenburg was a McBier at the McDonalds.
Do they really serve bire at McD? Cool!! For the most part we are going for the sights and sounds outside Munich for one day. A nice stroll around town and pick up some items for the lovely wives who are letting us go to Oktoberfest with our balls attached..

We have been there a few times, but have never rented a car. we always take the train. I know Chugger rented a bus a few years ago.. with a driver.
How long did it take you by train? By car google maps is giving the time as being 2hrs and 20 min. The time factor is what I am concerned about.

Per the Deutsche Bahn web site, it is 2 1/2 hour trip, about 73Euros roundtrip each.
If you chose to get a German Rail pass, if would be covered with that (www.raileurope.com).
The rail pass is usually a good idea if you do 2-3 trips by train.

Well... Having a DD trumps many things. It is a very nice drive (I actually did do it from Rothenburg to Munchen), and it does give you flexibility.
I am a little concerned that Alkoholoische will not be living up to his name.

There are no real beer halls, but there are nice little cafes or restaurants where beer can certainly be had.
But like BarleyMan mentions, almost nothing beats a Big Mac and a McBeer.

Attached balls are always a good thing.
