Deckels, deckels everywhere

OK. We're in Germany. We're sitting in a bier hall. Our Weisen, helles, lager, or pilzen is finally brought to our table. The dirndl-dressed help whacks Chugger on the head. Why?

'Cause he's playing with the deckels. Again. He won't leave them alone. From the second he sat down, he picked up the stack of deckels and has been shuffling, flipping, and passing them from hand to hand.

If we want our bier, we'll have to get Chugger to remember to put the things down for us to be served our biers.

So, a little on the humble deckel. The deckel was first intended to keep flies out of one's bier. Then it became the annoying thing that stuck to the bottom of one's condensation-moistened bier glass. Now its an article of post-modern art. A sort of Andy Warhol commercial art thing.

This week's edition of Der Spiegel has a few things to add. Here's a slideshow collection. Finally, there are games - drinking games - to be played with the things. All-in-all deckels will provide some distraction for us while we are there. While we are waiting for our dirndl-dressed bier provider to whack Chugger's head.

OK, I Couldn't Wait... Logo Challenge #3

This is a two part question, and by definition, if you get the first part, you also get the second part. However, you can get the second part without getting the first part. Follow that?

Come on troops, the game now seems to be "Beat BarleyMan".

Part 1.
Name the years.

Part 2.
Which logo came first?

Logo Trivia #2

Ok, the first was almost a "gimmee" in celebration of the first excursion to the land of brew. While this next one raises the bar just a bit, it is still rather easy. Who will beat BarleyMan to the punch?

A Trivia Challenge

As we count down the final days before departure, it is time to test your Oktoberfest Logo knowledge. This is the first in a series of "Name That Logo Year"! ! !

The Grand Oktoberfestian will publish a picture of a logo, and the first to identify the year of that logo gets a point. The highest point total prior to departure will win. Don't ask what the prize will be, it has yet to be determined. But be assured will certainly be related in one way, shape or form to beer. Some of the logos are from years we have attended (ah, who saved their mug?), and others will not.
Disclaimer.... the logos are small, and the words not very readable on some. This is 1) good so you cannot read the year and 2) good since they all say the same, it is really the logo that is different.

So, let the challenge begin. Name the year of this logo....

Responsibilities Being Assigned

Since every excursion requires key contributions from select people, it is time to apportion out some of those responsibilities. The first responsibility is ensuring that people get where they are supposed to be, when they are supposed to be. This is most important on the first day, and even more important for "newbies". Typically a veteran is assigned to a rookie to watch out for the unexpected and to guide that rookie through the trials and tribulations that can occur. So, as the self appointed Grand Oktoberfestian of this year's trip, after in-depth consultations with others more knowing and exulted, I make the following proclamation...

... Whereas the first veteran is scheduled to arrive in Munich at 9:50AM on UA #906, and

... Whereas the next contingent of Oktoberfestians, including three "newbies" is scheduled to arrive in Munich at 10:35AM on US #14,

... It is now proclaimed that.....

BarleyMan, the first of the aforementioned veteran Oktoberfestians is the first arrival in Munich and is hereby assigned the ultimate responsibility to ensure the first day's "newbies" arrive on time and safely. This responsibility includes directing the sojourn through the maze of the Munich U-Bahn/S-Bahn. In addition, this responsibility requires ensuring that the first Oktoberfest Brew (or any liquid with a head) is available to the Grand Oktoberfestian and his court as they arrive at the appointed Oktoberfestian Residence (aka the freakin' hotel). This entrance is expected to occur at approximately 13:15, depending on the cooperation of Delta Airlines and Air France.

After pleasantries are exchanged and initial brews are sampled, it is then off to the promised land to explore the limits of our livers and bladders.

Top 10 Thoughts as Arrival Day Approaches...

Please extend the list if you deem appropriate:

1. Will there be sufficient brew to accommodate our requirements?
2. Will any of our Oktoberfestians cancel out at the last moment?
3. How many Dirndls must we investigate?
4. Will not getting a train pass actually save us money?
5. How will we handle the inconvenience of not being close to the Giro Stand?
6. Will this be our last visit to Oktoberfest?
7. Will a group of this many Oktoberfesters resemble the EDS Cat Hurding commercial?
8. Will Einfahrt go shopping?
9. Will everyone arrive on time, as scheduled?
10. What if we get bored?

and the bonus thought of the day...
Really now, Who the Fuck is Alice anyway?

Recommendation

I reviewed Chuggers recommended Day Trip brochure. I found it to be a fine document worthy of an MBA. I have also taken count of the bier gardens. Here's a list:

- Englischer Garden (Seehaus, Chinese Turm)
- Hofbrauhaus
- Weis'n
- Kloster Weltenburg
- Kloster Andechs
- Braustuberl-Zieglerkeller Dachau
- Braustuberl Tegersee

We definately need to backfill the agenda with some additional beer halls...

Recommended (2 old, 1 new)

- Augustiner Keller
- Place with the huge trees, music, and fun time (see picture of Einfahrt in previous post)
- Augustiner Grossgaststatte
- On Karlplatz, near the HofBrau. Good if we can't make it that long without a beer
- Forschungsbrauerei
- A new place which is a highly regarded experimental brewery.

I strongly recommend we continue to keep the agenda fresh. I will never forget our first time at WaWi. What a magical place it was.

Master of Beer Appreciation

The latest Master of Beer Appreciation is honored....

A Matter of Balance

Your political reporter continues his series investigating the proposed EU regulation - Optical Radiation Directive. Brussels regulators are taking some heat. Oktoberfest officials: " [...] which habitually attracts more than six million visitors a year, were particularly angry at the proposed ban. "This is an attack on the traditions of a region," said a spokesman."

The researchers who talk to barmaids (interesting job there) for their information report: "I have spoken to lots of waitresses and none of them have told me that sunburn in the décolleté area has ever been a problem."

Luckily the jugs are ignoring the kerfuffle.

Your intrepid reporter - delivering the news that matters - fair and balanced.

What Happened Did You All Leave Early?

I am beginning to think you people ALL decided to go to the Fest early or else you are all in Japan, Switzerland, San Diego or whatever. I STILL need to know whether I need to get train tickets; oh wise ones. Based upon being at the Marriott and also since we might take some trips. I DON"T KNOW WHAT TRIPS OR WHERE! This is your chance to tell me "where to go " and how to get there.

Happy Day

Proof That You Can Sleep While Standing ! !

Optical Radiation Directive

According to Der Spiegel:
The potentially dull-sounding EU "Optical Radiation Directive" has got British tabloid The Sun in near hysteria today, as the paper fears it will lead to the end of the traditional English busty barmaid. According to the paper, the directive will ban barmaids "from wearing low-cut tops" as "barmaids run a skin cancer risk if they expose themselves to the sun when they go outside to collect glasses." The paper's ire was roused by recent reports that waitresses at the Munich's famous Oktoberfest would be forced by the directive to cover a little more cleavage. Waitresses at the festival wear the traditional 'dirndl' dress which accentuates the bust line and carry drinks to tables in the summer sunshine. In response to rumours that the dress would be outlawed by the directive, Munich's mayor threatened never again to go into a beer garden in the city if the dirndl was done away with.

Luckily the caption for the picture says: "Don't worry, nobody is going to stop you looking at their jugs."

Whew!

Brew Trip report - Israel

I recently returned from Israel, where I enjoyed the hospitality immensly. There was generally good beer to be found, including the local brews, Goldstar and Maccabi. Both are great to drink in the heat. There is another beverage called Malty which is non-alcoholic, and very sweet, like wirt. Yuch.

Tel Aviv is a great party town, with bars & beaches galore, great restaurants. Here's a photo of yours truly enjoying a Weinhenstephan, from the oldest brewery in the world (729 AD). Good brew, good times.... gearing up for the big one in 57 days!

Be Careful at Oktoberfest... the results of too much beer!

Find an Oktoberfestian ! ! !

With only 57 days until arrival, activity is increasing both locally and at the Wiesn. It is even more appropriate now to continue our discussions, get more serious, get less serious, and just plain communicate. You never know who may be watching. And speaking of watching, there are Oktoberfest Police everywhere. Can you find the Traveling Oktoberfester amongst some of Munich's finest?

Bow Your Heads... A Sad Day for Dayton Beer Drinkers

It was announced yesterday (27 Jul 05) that our local and most beloved Micro Brewery, the Thirsty Dog, will no longer be brewing beer Crying . The brewing equipment has been sold, and the brew room will become just another dining area for large groups.

We new something was in the air because management actually tried to sell the place to Einfahrt and Chugger twice. As recently as the past two months a partner is quoted as saying... "make me an offer and I'll push it through".

While we do not know when the final drop of on-site brewed beer will flow, we are sure a worldwide moment of silence would be appropriate as we down our last mug of Goldings Retriever, Wheat Weiler, Robinson' s Pale Ale and the signature brew.... Old Leghumper
Crying.

Please raise your glasses, your mugs, and especially your Maß in honor of our loss. While they will still carry other microbrewed beers on tap, it will never be the same drinking a fresh one right from the premises. Crying.

Hotel Food

I have been worried about the restaurant and fanciness of the Excelsior and here's what I found out about the Hotel food. I am worried about a culture clash.
--------------
Michael Huesken
Executive Chef de Cuisine

Dear Barley Man,

I have worked as a Chef for the last 12 years, having gained expertise while working at several famous Parisian hotels. For the last three years I have been working at the neighbouring Hotel Konigshof's Michelin Star Restaurant and the Excelsior's Vinothek, known as one of the hottest spots in town.

My style is Mediterranean, using local and seasonal ingredients, so the menu changes every two weeks. We are open seven days a week for lunch and dinner, offering a wide variety from Italian pasta dishes to new German specialities. We are famous for our wine list, with over 400 different brands, ranging from a wide variety of German and Austrian white wines to rare and old Bordeaux, many of them served by the glass. The Vinothek is very lively and has a fun and relaxed atmosphere and is always popular with locals.

Michael Huesken,
Executive Chef de Cuisine,
Hotel Excelsior, Munich

________

I then got a note on my request to the Hotel Alfa:

Ziegfried von Stuebben
Executive Chef de Cuisine

Dear Barley Man,

I have worked as a Cook for the last 47 years, having gained expertise while working at several famous Hauptbahnhof pizza stands. I pioneered the first Tuna Fish Pizza (served only past 11pm). For the last three years I have been working at the neighbouring Gryo To Go restaurant and the Alfa's premium breakfast buffet, known as one of the hottest spots in town.

My style is simple, using local and seasonal ingredients, so the menu changes every day. I buy what is cheap off the truck driven by a Hungarian gypsy that meanders through the streets looking for gullible customers. We are open seven days a week for breakfast, offering a wide variety from Italian pepperoni slices to new German specialities such as warm orange juice to Limburger cheese. We are famous for our coffee and dry toast. The Alfa is very lively and has a fun and relaxed atmosphere and is always popular with locals. The morning time is especially fun, as most guests are just trying to keep thier food down from a night of heavy drinking.

Executive Chef de Cuisine,
Hotel Alfa, Munich

Hotel Rooms

Chugger-

Anything we need to do prior to arriving in 60 some odd days? Send them our Name & Credit Card #?

What's the room rate anyway?

I did check out Grumpy's hotel.. looks very nice. The excelsior is magnificient. I think all of us are going to be too soft from this luxury. The roughness of the Alfa put an edge on that lasted all day. God forbid if the excelsior has Orange Juice that is not warm in the breakfast buffet. ;-) They may even have ICE at the bar.

Train Passes Revisited: Yes or No ?

I believe it is time for a final discussion/decision on whether we should get train passes or not. My current opinion is No. What do you think?

I base my opinion on the following...
A twin pass costs $135US per person. So, assuming my math is correct, that's about $270 for the passes. Now, those passes will provide unlimited Deutsche Bahn travel and S-Bahn travel around Munich (not the U-Bahn). Looking at our proposed trips, the only true Deutsche Bahn travel would be to Kloster Weltenburg. This is approximately 18.8 Euro per person each way. At an exchange rate of $1.25 per Euro, that is about $93 for two people round trip.

An U-bahn single day/all zone pass, with a partner is 16 Euro ($20). So, even if a pass was purchased for four days, that's another $80. Total expenditures for train travel approximately $173; saving $100 over the passes. Now, I know I've probably underestimated a few things, but even with that, it seems like the pay-as-you-go method works out better.

Let the discourse begin......

Dangers of Drinking Beer

Chugger specially for you reading your last HofBrauHaus posting about "Babes in Deutschland".

Police are warning all men who frequent clubs, parties and local pubs to be alert and stay cautious when offered a drink from any woman.
Many females use a date rape drug on the market called "Beer". The drug is found in liquid form and available anywhere. It comes in bottles, cans, from taps and in large "kegs".
"Beer" is used by female sexual predators at parties and bars to persuade their male victims to go home and have sex with them.
A woman needs only to get a guy to consume a few units of "Beer" and then simply ask him home for no strings attached sex.
Men are rendered helpless against this approach. After several "Beers", men will often succumb to the desires to perform sexual acts on women whom they would never normally be attracted.
After drinking "Beer", men often awaken with only hazy memories of exactly what happened to them the night before, often with just a vague feeling that "something bad" occurred.
At other times, these unfortunate men are swindled out of their life's savings, in a familiar scam known as "a relationship." In extreme cases, the female may even be shrewd enough to entrap the unsuspecting male into a longer-term form of servitude and punishment referred to as "marriage".
Men are much more susceptible to this scam after "Beer" is administered and sex is offered by the predatory females.
Please forward this warning to every male you know. If you fall victim to this "Beer" and the women administering it, there are male support groups where you can discuss the details of your shocking encounter with similarly affected like-minded guys. For the support group nearest you, just look up "Golf Courses" in the phone book.

Some Thoughts as Munich Preparation Day Approaches

Unlike others, I have had the pleasure of sampling several (or should I say large quantities) of Hofbrauhaus brew in the last two months. Initially during the first week of May in Las Vegas I was able to consume the golden nectar at the Hofbrauhaus. One of those nights was with the pleasant company of BarleyMan. A few weeks later, I was also blessed with a three day visit to Munich, and actually stayed in the Hotel Platzl, right across from the Hofbrauhaus. Needless to say (but I will anyway), serious consumption was undertaken. I was even able to accomplish this with my traveling companions, the "Babes in Deustchland".

So, for you first timers, or at least for those of you that have not experienced a "Hofbrauhaus Moment" for some time, just remember....

1. "Ein Bier Bitte" will get you a bier. A litre that is!
2. Always visit a Hofbrauhaus with friends. If you cannot go with a friend, order "Ein Bier Bitte" and make some new friends.
3. Always document the occasion.
4. Your horrible singing voice will always sound great after a few biers, so please join in the singing. Especially if "Alice" is involved. (story to be told in person).
5. John Denver is the patron saint of German bier drinking. (another story to be told later).

Good News to Einfahrt !

Drink beer and lose weight
By Dr. GIFFORD-JONES

How would you like a doctor who says, "You must lose 40 pounds or you're headed for trouble! That means no more fancy desserts and other goodies. But I've got good news for you. You can have a pint of beer a day!" I'd wager this would make dieting more palatable. But it would raise the eyebrows of a few puritans. Dr. David Williams is a professor of chemistry at the Universioty of Wales. He reports in the journal Chemistry In Britain that a pint of beer a day can be part of a weight-loss program. He states that beer is 93% water, contains no sugars or fat and only low levels of additives. In fact, he says beer is the complete food because it contains carbohydrates, protein and vitamins. Beer and Fitness? Can It Be?
By Stew Smith - U.S. Naval Academy

I was asked an interesting question concerning drinking beer and exercising. It seems that a former Navy Radioman has developed quite a gut since retiring, and was curious about whether he should give up his beer to lose weight? Not only does the gentleman enjoy drinking about 2-4 beers daily, he also has quit exercising. Moderate beer consumption is actually healthy, so I set out to define "moderate" as well as educate on the basics of caloric intake and caloric expenditure. The radioman is not suffering from a beer belly but an INACTIVITY BELLY! Yes, you can still drink beer and be very fit. More...................>

Oktoberfestvisits May Be Shut Down :-(

Well fellow Oktoberfestians, it seems that our blog may be caught in the "lack of use" category. Like many free internet services, it appears that if you don't use it, you may lose it. That's the case here.

I received a message from Blogspot (who is actually part of Google), that said our site is under review due to lack of activity. While they are dedicated to providing a mechanism for internet users to freely share ideas and thoughts, the resources required to maintain blogs that are not used creates a tremendous overhead. Therefore, unless our Blog experiences a significant increase in posting activity, it may be delegated to a "secondary support" category (whatever that means), or set as inactive.

So....... Assuming that this Blog is useful, fun, and more importantly a way to share our ideas and thoughts on this year's trip.... get your butts a bloggin'.

Idyllwild Trip report

Hi everyone,

In our run-up to Oktoberfest, Paulaner Girl and I have been busy sampling brews, and low and behold, we found a spot of Nirvana.

Idyllwild is a small mountain town located about 85 miles North East of San Diego. It's a great town, full of good restaurants, bars, Antique shops, and great views of the mountains. We went hiking and camping. The climbing is great there too. Idyllwild is located on the west side of San Jacinto Peak, which is next to Palm springs. You may have seen the Tram that goes up to the top. People who go from the Idyllwild side climb up Devil's Slide.

A friend recommended a place called Motzart. It is just out side of town. The first time we stopped it was closed for a hour between dinner and lunch. But it looked promising.

The second time was the charm. And the featured bier of the restaurant is... Weltenburger Kloster Bier!

They had the Dunkel, so I partook of the fine brew, on a sunny afternoon in their Beer Garden. Superb.

This makes it required that we visit the fine monks... I give it 4 1/2 Steins!

Get the Humor Flowing ! ! !

This is in honor of our Scottish friends at the bachelor party at Augustiner Keller during our last trip.....

Places I have never been

As most of you know, I am not a conservative.;-)

What that means is that I revel in new things, never willing to settle for the same old way of doing things.

The same goes for my experiences. I lust for the different, the unique, and the new. I am not so old or senile to forget the many great things we have done in Munich, but as good as they were, I always like new stuff.

So here's the places I have never been, and would be interested in experiencing:

Garmisch
Wurzburg
45 of the Beer Halls in BDG2M
Dachau (the camp and the town)
Weltenburg
Regensburg
Munich Student section
Olympic Park
The nude sunbathing part of Englischer garten (OK, I have been there, but the people change.. so it is new!)

Places of Interest

Being the neophyte, I contacted certain people regarding suggestions of interest, knowing full well I have EXPERTS among our midst.
Several places, were: The English Gardes and some of their hidden Bier Gardens; Rottenburg on the Romantiche Strasse; Garmish-Partishkierchen; and Neuschwanstein Castle.
Did I make a mistake posting this? I'm sure I'll find out.

Clock wrong?

Chugger-

By my calculation, Paulaner Girl & I are leaving first for the Oktoberfest. Shouldn't your timer be set to our sdeparture at 8:35am (PDT) on September 28th?

It also seems to be worng, nontheless, since it says right now that you will be leaving in 98 days, 11 hours and 23 minutes from now (which appears to be midnight).

Trip to Weltenburg

Finally got a response from the folks in Germany.

I thought we could do the whole thing by train?

-----

Thank you for your enquiry from 2nd June 2005. In answer to your qustion as regards travelling from Munich to Kelheim, we would recommend that you travel by train from Munich to Saal/Donau, an from there you can travel by bus to Kelheim(Wöhrdplatz).
We would be pleased if you could enfam us in advance, how many people would be travelling with the ship to Weltenburg in order that we could reserve places if needed.

Wedding Recap.....

A good time was had by all, and everything was accomplished without any major (or for that fact, minor) incident. I guess the only think that comes close was my mother's inability to attend. She fell in the shower last Thursday and is still in the hospital. No real injuries (at least that they can find), but they are continuing to run tests to determine what happened. It really bummed her out, and you can only imagine how Traci felt.

The weather even cooperated all weekend, and it was more than ideal..... middle 70's, low humidity, slightly cloudy at time to keep the heat under control. Someone was looking out for us (I can't imagine why, though). A great ceremony in church (the father did almost trip on the bride's dress). We then headed over to the reception for 4 hours of food, drink and frivolity. Mostly food and drink, but some frivolity. We even had Gregory smiling and dancing with his Mother & Sister... Go Figure ! ! ! For those of you that could not make it... we missed you. For those of you that did, how was it?

I will provide links and or actual pictures sometime next week. I'll be swamped this week getting ready for my final week of class (I know, you don't really care). Term papers and case studies still need to be completed.

Beer at Work

1. It's an incentive to show up.
2. It reduces stress.
3. It leads to more honest communications.
4. It reduces complaints about low pay.
5. It cuts down on time off because you can work with a hangover.
6. Employees tell management what they think, not what management wants to hear.
7. It helps save on heating costs in the winter.
8. It encourages carpooling.
9. Increase job satisfaction because if you have a bad job, you don't care.
10. It eliminates vacations because people would rather come to work.
11. It makes fellow employees look better.
12. It makes the cafeteria food taste better.
13. Bosses are more likely to hand out raises when they are wasted.
14. Salary negotiations are a lot more profitable.
15. Suddenly, burping during a meeting isn't so embarrassing.
16. Employees work later since there's no longer a need to relax at the bar.
17. It makes everyone more open with their ideas.
18. Everyone agrees the work is better after they've had a couple of drinks.
19. Eliminates the need for employees to get drunk on their lunch break.
20. Increases the chance of seeing your boss naked.
21. It promotes foreign relations with the former Soviet Union.
22. The janitor's closet will finally have a use.
23. Employees no longer need coffee to sober up.
24. Sitting on the copy machine will no longer be seen as "gross"
25. Babbling and mumbling incoherently will be common language.

Woman and Beer

From ancient Egypt up to the medieval home breweries, the course followed by this drink is directly linked with companionship. Woman was considered the muse of beer, from ancient times till today. Since its discovery in a prehistoric cave, beer is nothing but a mixture of barley and water, forgotten by a woman overnight, after a tiring day of harvesting. It is consumed by the man-hunter in the morning and it pleases him so much that it takes the place of water. Beer, with a great tradition in Babylonia as in Egypt, is the legacy of Tsabitus, the heads of the houses that offered pleasure. In the Vikings, the priestesses of Thor processed it in huge boilers for the production of the youth elixir, which was then offered to the warriors by the Valkyries, loved by Wotan as well as Odin.

In the Middle Ages woman perpetuates the tradition by including the preparation of beer in her everyday chores, as in Alsace where we talk about "Hausbrauerei" (Brewery at home).

In the beginning of beer production, woman created an eternal drink which is honored by the brewers of France in the ode that follows and is titled:

"The spirit of beer seduces women"

Women with tradition,
women of shade,
women of light,
legendary women,
goddesses,
servants and priestesses,
fertile women,
lovers of life's cycle
women brewers,
possessors of the secrets of hops and barley,
shy women,
women with passion,
from ancient times up to the present live,
inventive,
happy,
women of today,
irresistible and alleviating,
reconciled with life…

Who else aside from woman can understand better than anyone the graces of the most feminine drink. Using the basic advantage which is its femininity, beer reveals the treasures of its seduction which are hidden inside. Of course, beer is comprised of cereals and yeast, a source of vitamins, minerals and with few calories. Revitalizing, it foams in the eyes of women who desire even more their participation in its production as well as its consumption.

Someone has to defend we women

Since women are pitifully underrepresented on the site, I feel motivated to make some kind of response to Chugger's last post. I feel especially qualified to write this because I talk to a lot of women every day. Sorry guys, but this is how I see it.
  • Possessing a penis does not make you genetically superior. In fact, many people consider the Y chromosone to be an inferior mutation of the X.
  • Possessing a Y chromosone does not make you automatically right. Try to remember that.
  • The X chromosone does not include a housework gene
  • Shopping is NOT a sport. It is a religion, and therefore protected by the constitution. As you know, it definitely has non-profit status. Please do not try to compare something as superficial as football to our religion. The shopping religion is a very demanding one, and requires frequent visits to multiple places of worship, often in malls. However, sometimes we are drawn to worship at smaller temples of holiness, called boutiques.
  • No one has enough shoes
  • You need more shoes.
  • PMS is a legal defense. However, when we get mad at you, please do not make the mistake of blaming it on PMS. Chances are you did something stupid, and it could get you killed.
  • If you put the toilet seat up, put it down. We will try to do the same.
  • Who gives a damn whether the toilet paper goes under or over?
  • Just because you can pee outside doesn't mean you should.
  • Grabbing our ass or boobs as you walk by is not a turn on. I repeat, it is NOT a turn on.
  • Grabbing our ass or boobs as you walk by is not foreplay.
  • Grabbing our ass or boobs as you walk by is not a substitute for kissing or hugging. Trust me. If you can remember this, you will be a happy man.
  • Men doing housework IS a turn on.
  • Asking if we want to "fool around" does not translate to "I love you" to us. Sorry.
  • Women are not pacifiers.
  • Women are not gumball machines. We are slot machines. If you ever want to get lucky, you have to keep putting in quarters. (By the way, I made that up, and therefore if you quote me, I expect to be appropriately cited in accordance to current APA guidelines).
  • Hooters girls are not entertainers. They are waitresses in push-up bras. They are only nice to you because they want a good tip. Don't ask us to go to Hooters.
  • Please don't ask if your outfit matches unless you want to hear the truth.
  • Unless you look like Brad Pitt, please don't expect us to look like Angelina Jolie or Jennifer Anniston.
  • You don't look like Brad Pitt. Sorry.
  • If you think I look fat or unattractive in my outfit, please tell me before we leave the house, not after we arrive at our destination.
  • My job is as important as yours.
  • Surfing the net is not a legitimate excuse for getting out of helping with whatever we ask for help with.
  • We do not know "where the hell your clean underwear is".
  • If you don't like tears, don't swear at us.
  • Crying is not blackmail. If you don't like tears, don't make us cry.
  • Most men can be replaced with 2 C batteries. Try to be one of the ones that can't be replaced. It makes it all worth it. :-)

Not beer or Oktoberfest related, but......

Speaking of Rules....

We always hear "the rules" from the female perspective, and now, for everyone's education, are some rules passed along from the male perspective.

Please note, these are all numbered "1" ON PURPOSE!

Feel free to comment and correct or amend any rule; especially you Paulaner Girl ! !

1. Women need to learn to work the toilet seat.
You're a big girl. If it's up, put it down. We need it up, you need it down. You don't hear us complaining about you leaving it down.

1. Sunday sports.
It's like the full moon or the changing of the tides. Let it be.

1. Shopping is NOT a sport.
And no, we are never going to think of it that way.

1. Crying is blackmail.

1. Ask for what you want.
Let us be clear on this one:
Subtle hints do not work!
Strong hints do not work!
Obvious hints do not work!
Just say it!

1. Yes and No are perfectly acceptable answers to almost every question.

1. Come to us with a problem only if you want help solving it.
That's what we do. Sympathy is what girlfriends are for.

1. Anything we said 6 months ago is inadmissible in an argument.
In fact, all comments become null and void after 7 days.

1. If you won't dress like the Victoria's Secret girls, don't expect us to act like soap opera guys.

1. If something we said can be interpreted two ways and one of the ways makes you sad or angry, we meant the other one.

1. You can either ask us to do something or tell us how you want it done. Not both.
If you already know best how to do it, just do it yourself.

1. Whenever possible, please say whatever you have to say during commercials.

1. Christopher Columbus did not need directions and neither do we.

1. ALL men see in only 16 colors, like Windows default settings.
Peach, for example, is a fruit, not a color.
Pumpkin is also a fruit.
We have no idea what mauve is.

1. If it itches, it will be scratched.
We do that.

1. If we ask what is wrong and you say "nothing," we will act like nothing's wrong.
We know you are lying, but it is just not worth the hassle.

1. If you ask a question you don't want an answer to, expect an answer you don't want to hear.

1. When we have to go somewhere, absolutely anything you wear is fine...Really.

1. Don't ask us what we're thinking about unless you are prepared to discuss such topics as baseball, the shotgun formation, or monster trucks.

1. You have enough clothes.

1. You have too many shoes.

1. I am in shape.
Round is a shape.

1. Men really don't mind sleeping on the couch after an argument.
It's like camping.

All Hail the Euro ! ! !

The Euro continues to decline against the Almight Dollar (or is more appropriate to say the Dollar Gains Against the Euro ! ! !). Yee Ha ! ! ! It closed today at $1.21 per Euro. If this trend continues, we may actually be able to afford to drink this year.

Check out the trend....

Time to Release the Rooms at Hotel Alfa?

While I enjoy being a travel agent and trip organizer (yeah right ! ! !), we still have a significant number of rooms available at the infamous Hotel Alfa. My plan is to cancel all of them July 1st. Any reason not to?

I know there is at least one other person who will not be mentioned that still says "I'm going", but hasn't committed. I'm not a babysitter, and if you can't commit after almost 6 months, the French would say "C'est la vie". I say, "tough shit".

Here's the latest "final" assignments.

Oktoberfester Field Trip report, Tokyo

Barleyman reporting in from Tokyo. No Barley malt in sight. All beer appears to be made from Rice. Hops in minimal quantities.

Any suggestions?

Tried Sapporo Black label last night. Reminded me of Carling Black Label (Mabel, Hey Mabel, Get off of the table, the quarter was for the beer!)

Seriously, anyone know of any Japanese beer worth drinking that I can only get here in country? I like Kirin and Asahi, but both are pretty bland.

News?!

I just read this in the news:

The Australian minister Grant McBride is trying to ban the Dutch beerbrand Shag. It's a beer from the Alfa brewery in Limburg The Netherlands. He said their slogan Fancy a Shag? is indecent. :?

Hope they don't ban shags in Australia. :)

Possible new Trip?

New Research Beer Price at the Wies'n

The Barbus Research Team & Co Ltd (a division of OJEMKBDZ Corp.) has published their latest report on Beer prices at the Wiessen.
another good tip from
Barbus Research Team Ltd.

(a division of OJEMKBDZ Corp.)

Although the Euro is lower the Beer price is getting higher in 2005 at the Wies'n. An average of 2% is to be expected.

The report by Barbus Research Team & Co Ltd is an in-depth study on all Wies'n Beer Tents. Reasons for the Beer price raise is mainly caused by the Bush economics Policies resulting into higher grain prices.

A spokesman of The Barbus Research Team & Co Ltd (a division of OJEMKBDZ Corp.) said that the Wies'n Beer Tent owners expect even more raise following the Euro in reverse.

Grumpy's New Hotel Looks Convenient

I did some quick looking, and the new Marriott that Grumpy and Mrs. Grumpy will be staying at is only about a 15 mins. U-Bahn ride from the Hauptbahnhof. Just take the U6 and get off at Nordfriedhof, then a few minute walk to the hotel. (all caveats apply, please check your local listings)

See the map.

Herding Cats

Well all. We have a great group of people going to the O this year. More than we've ever had. I am going to enjoy the company of all who come. But. However. In contrast. I for one have no idea how to get consensus, coordination, or even congregation of people at the same place/same time. I'd enjoy other's thoughts on this. My personal take is somewhat c'est la vie, whatever, or shit happens - in other words I'm not going to worry about it too much. But. However. I am going to go. I am going to see the sights. I am going to the grounds. I am going to dinner. I am often going in the company of Mrs. EinFahrt. I am not particularly going to try and coordinate anybody. But. However. I am not going to wait around and be coordinated either. Discussion? Help? Advice?

Ramblings as the Wedding Approaches...

Nothing of any substance today, just sitting here bored, had a beer at lunch and waiting for a fellow hops aficionado to go do some samplings. So here are the top ten things on my mind at the moment...

1. Almost exactly 9 days from now the ceremony begins.
2. That event is followed by mass quantities of consumption.
3. The mass quantities will be to avoid the non-pleasantries expected through talking with the in-laws.
4. I see the Euro is steady, and maybe even declining slightly more.
5. All hail the Dutch election. It would have been more monumental had they not "followed the French".
6. Speaking of the French, why is it called a "French Kiss"? Who would want to do that to a Frenchman?
7. This picture is especially dedicated to Paulaner Girl and her favorite traveling companion from the 1997 trip.
8. Speaking of 1997, that was 8 years ago.
9. I was going to make this item two parts, but I will combine it into one... without looking, in what year was the "German Purity Law" established? The first question was going to be what is the law actually called? (answer: Reinheitsgebot). So now, what is the year it was established? Remember.... no looking.

and now, the 10th item on my mind.....
Why are you reading this instead of contributing to the Blog?

Oh... for extra credit... What does "Reinheitsgebot" really mean?

What does this all have to do with beer and Oktoberfest? I need beer and I'm looking forward to Oktoberfest. What more do you want?

What happened to the "Available to Trade" posting?

Title says it all.....

Keep Cheering for the Strengthening of the Dollar (or Weakening of the Euro)

Regardless of how you spin it, if the current trend continues, we will certainly have more buying power come trip time...

"The euro, which has lost about 3.2% since France voted resoundingly on Sunday to reject the EU constitution, fell below $1.22 late in U.S. trading for the first time in eight months."

Just two weeks ago while I was "over there", the exchange rate was $1.30; about 5% change. Keep up the good work everyone.

Reflecting on the Previous New Day Trip Post

If you have not read the details on the previous post, please do so before reading this.

All I want to say here is that the potential interim destination to get to Weltenburg, Regensburg, looks and sounds so much like Reagan's Burg, we can't pass it up.

Possible New Day Trip

I may have found a wonderful new day trip opportunity. Please check this out and post your little blogging fingers off.

Day Trips Discussion

I originally posted this on the Web Site , but thought this might be a better forum for comments. So, here goes...

My original posting included the following, with some comments changed based upon feedback already received. Please add your comments, and I will update the original should your comment make sense :-)

Thursday

Today is the day the first pilgrims arrive. While our first excursion is usually to the Hofbrauhaus, the suggested plan is to wait until Friday when Henk, Gemma, Candy and Debbie arrive. So, with that said, the proposal for Thursday is to fairly quickly head on over to the Wiesn. We will have a smaller crowd (Keith, John, Dave, Joyce, Jack, Speedy_Civic, Jane, Jim and Sam) and commandeering a table in the early afternoon should be straight forward. So, the theme for Thursday is bier, music, and lots of it. Should we need food, we can consume solid nourishment at a tent. This plan has many advantages.....

  1. It gets us drinking quickly.

  2. It allows us to drink for an extended time.

  3. Food is available for the faint of heart.

  4. A great jet lag cure.

  5. No one will know if you crash early. Blame it on drinking.

Friday

An early morning trek to Englischer Gardens is recommended. The benefit of this trip is the "Buy One Get One Free" special at Seehaus. Once the next contingent arrives, we can head on over to the Hofbrauhaus for our traditional welcoming celebration. While this is typically intended to be a quick few biers before heading the Wiesn, it rarely works that way. We tend to spend a significant amount of time reviewing the plans for the weekend, welcoming new guests, hugging and kissing the Frauleins, and general all around good fun. After drinks (and/or food) at the Hofbrauhaus, options exist....

  1. Head on over to the Wiesn. We do have new arrivals, and one of them has never been to the 'fest before.

  2. Head to the hotel and crash. This is only an option if it is late and you can no longer stand on your own.

  3. Explore a new establishment from "The Book according to Larry". Depending on the time, Paulaner Brauhaus might be appropriate.

Saturday

This wonderful day should be dedicated to exploring new venues. Both within the immediate area, and via train if necessary. A good starting point would once again be "The Book according to Larry"; hereafter referred to as "TBA2L". Some possible suggestions include.....

  1. Braustuberl Tegernsee. About a one hour train ride, a 5-Beer Mug rating, and a member of the "Buy One Get One Free" club, this place comes highly recommended by Larry. Please read about Braustuberl Tegernsee on Page 183 of TBA2L.

  2. Zieglerkeller Braustuberl Dachau. A great place that we have frequented in the past. Depending on timing and other consideration, this could be a late morning early afternoon excursion followed by the visit to Tegernsee.

  3. Augustiner Keller. Always a nice place to end the evening, sitting under the trees and looking for Scots pulling up their kilts.

Sunday

It's Sunday, and what more can we say than Kloster Andechs.

Monday

The last day of Oktoberfest, and Richard and Agnes depart for home. I believe that an early start at the Wiesn is in order, though, to morn the ending of this year's event. Maybe a couple of us diehards can get there at opening time, slam a few, and save a table for everyone else who would love to have lunch there. Maybe an evening trek to "Wali World" would be appropriate. "Wali World" is actually also know as "Wa-Wi", but correctly named Waldwirtschaft Grosshesselohe.

Jim and Sam are abandoning us this day to travel to Wurzburg to pursue some Dell family history. Wurzburg has also been suggested as a day trip for sampling some German wine.

Tuesday

Up early, and off to the Flughafen for most of us.

No comments necessary.

Itenerary

Bonnie and I(Ron Hamilton) will be leaving West Palm Beach on the 28th. We will pick up the same Philly flight as John Lynch and party. Currently we will be staying at the Marriott at the airport as Bonnie will be working part of the time and as I am now "on a fixed income", I am planing on using Marriott Points that NCR so nicely provided me as an employee.(500,000PTS)
I realize this may not be the most convient, but hopefully the airport is not so far from the fun that we will be able to attend. If this is not true, please advise and we will do the hotel. We are planing on leaving on the 4th for Sweden and finally returning from Paris around the 12th. We are planing on taking a train to Sweden(thought it would be different). Possibly your European friends could help us with this.

Grumpy
By the way we will be arriving four days after my wife's 50th so show her no mercy.

Chugger Back on Home Turf

Reports are that Chugger has returned to home base after two weeks of research work. Some pictures to follow to document some of his activities.

Achtung - Achtung: Special Report ! ! !

After this morning´s report, I felt I was finished with my reports, but complacency set in. I was beginning to think... hey, I´ve been in the promised land so many times, there is nothing more to experience. So I went back to the room and decided I needed a reading from "The Book According to Larry". After reading a few verses, it was apparent that I did not know everything I needed to know. The following describes the experience that Larry induced, and is dedicated to Paulaner Girl.

The Book describes Paulaner Brauhaus as "a local microbrewery", so I said to myself (self I said), off we go. Two U-Bahn stops from Marian Platz and I was there. How did we miss it after all these years? A great little place, with the beer brewed on-site. Indeed a micro-brewery. It is amazing how fresh a Hefe Weissen is after being drawn directly from the tank. I think I have a picture to prove it. I say "think" because after one litre of Maibock (7.5%) and one litre of Hefe Weissen (6%), I don´t really recall. All I do know is I will gleefully escort anyone back who cares to experience this wonderful place; still using copper kettles.

Well, extraction is still scheduled for "oh my god it´s early tomorrow (7:10A local time). According to Traci, this is the "butt crack of dawn". Actually, with the current time zone, the butt crack of dawn actually occurs around 5:30A local time. I´ll be at the airport by then.

So, looking forward to a rendezvous with Einfart tomorrow at the arrival point.

Just remember, approximately 4 months and 5 days until the cult arrives in the promised land.

Auf Wiedersehen.

Field Report #4

My last day in Munich started off rather well. Still had a nice buzz from the previous night at the Hofbrauhaus. We closed it down and were told to go home. The "Babes in Deustchland" love those litres ! !

Anyway, the day was quickly ruined. I took the U-Bahn over to the Wiesen, and to my surprise, guess what I saw.....

Nothing ! ! ! A complete empty field. How humiliating and disgusting. I was expecting to have a nice litre to quench my thirst, maybe some Hendel and a radish. Knowing I would not need to fight the crowds, I was excited. But NO ! ! ! ! A sight no human being should be subjected to. I took pictures and will post them later, but prepare yourself for the worst. They will not be censored, and young children and women should be protected.

Finally, there were also two hotel viewings this morning. The traditional Hotel Alfa and the Hotel Excelsior.

Well, it´s off for a brat and a bier. Chugger signing off for the final time on this research trip. Additional information and pictures to follow once I am safely deposited back at home base.

Prosit ! !

A spy in our midst???

Hmmm...

Agent Barbus has alerted us to some information being posted about Chugger from an Anonymous source.

Due to recent 'anonymous sources' and the problems associated at Newsweek, we are very leery of this information.

However, Chugger himself, in the last communique, stated he actually found a place with no beer in Germany. That's like finding a restaurant in South Carolina without barbeque sauce. Or a strip bar without 1 Euro notes.

Anonymous source, identify yourself!

Field Report #3

After multiple technology challenges, I am now able to file my next report. We spent many nights in the land of the frogs, and even flirted with the Father Land one day and visted for about 5 hours. I am now firmly implanted in the land of beer, and am carrying out my duties with pleasure.

Samplings of the nectar in both Heidelberg and Frankfurt were successful, with research notes to be published. A clandestine meeting with fellow field researcher Barbus lead to an interesting and somewhat unfortunate discovery. Nurishment of the food kind was had at a restaurant in Frankfurt that is the only restaurant in Frankfurt (and possibly Germany) that DOES NOT SERVE BEER ! ! ! ! ! AHHHH! What an uncivilized environment. We did survive though, and secret agent Barbus was able to help with the culture gap.

After a fine outting with Barbus and his better half, it was off to the promised land that we cherish so much. I am electronically penning this report in my hotel room, with a view out my window of the Hofbrauhaus. That's correct, I can stumble a mere 20 meters and be at the next level. We visted last evening, and sampled the liquid they are so famous for. Associate researchers Beth and Melissa (Barbus can attest to these) have been photographed with large glass recepticles filled with a common golden liquid. I have affectionately dubbed them the "Babes in Deustchelend".

Tomorrow will be an excursion to the holy land. I will visit the Wiesen to document its virgin state. Not many have experienced a naked Wiesen, and the photographs will be not for the faint of heart. Wish me luck, it will be an emotional experience.

BTW.... I did file an verbal report with Einfarht as is required by research law. However, it is apparent that Einfarht did not fullfill his duties to pass along the information.

Wish me luck and Gemutlicheit.

Chugger signing off for now.... the beer Police are in pursuit.

Recovery Team in Place

We have launched a search and recovery effort with regards to Chugger. He has not been heard of since Tuesday!

He did not make the last transmission when he connected with Barbus.

Hopefully he is exploring the deep dark crevices of some beer hall. ;-) Worst case was that the dirction were wrong in the Beer Guide and he is in Austria.

Field Report #2

Samplings have been many and varied. Introduced some traveling companions to Belgium Lambic. Silliness was rampant. We then moved on to a Peach Beer. Sounds shitty, but tastes great (less filling). Today's highlight was touring the Heineken Brewery. Actually, the tour wasn't the highlight. The tasting at the end was the highlight. Three pints in less than 20 minutes.

By the way.... the honey beer I mentioned in the last report is called Dorelei. Hummm Humm Good.

Well, off to more research work tonight, then Heidelberg in the morning.

Looking forward to seeing Barbus on Friday.

Chugger signing off for now. So little time, so much research.

Field Report #1

After arriving in Paris 8 hours late, it was off to dinner and Pigalle. But first, the escapade. We were approximately 1 hour past Nova Scotia, and both long range radios failed on the aircraft. We then made a u-turn and headed to Atlanta.... remember, we started from Cincinnati. Got to Atlanta and changed planes, and 1 1/2 hours later we are back in the air.

Pigalle saw us bar/cafe hopping and dodging rain drops. The weather in Paris made it seem more like London. Nonetheless? I was truly impressed with a French Honey Beer. It is from the Alsace wine region and I cannot remember the name. Now that we are in Strasbourg (the Alsace region) I will definitely try to discover this wonderful taste again. We did experience "beer flambè" last night. Take a large marguarita style glass, add 2 shots of some highly flamable liquor, and then pour in some Erdlinger Weiss Bier. The taste is incredible.... and the spectacle is something else as well.

That's today's report for now. Limited access to Internet so reports may be sparse. Also, ignore any misspellings... this damn French keyboard has the letters in the wrong position :-(

Two more days in Strasbourg, then off to Heidelberg and Frankfurt, with the ultimate come Sunday.... Munchen.

Friday, May 13, 2005

Expeditionary Force is Deployed

Now that chugger is deployed in country, we should expect real-time telemetry. I look forward to his reports as they come in. I volunteer to assess the intelligence as it comes in, formulate policy, and redistribute to the field commanders, as they prepare the troops for deployment in September.

The Countdown Begins...

It is now 1:40P Eastern Time, and in 5 1/2 hours, my flight leaves for Paris. In approximately 6 days when I arrive in Heidelberg, the German beer drinking begins. After Heidelberg, 3 days in Frankfurt will "get my juices flowing" as the trip climaxes (maybe literally) with 3 days in Munich. The highlight of this Munich trip will be my hotel.... The Hotel Platzl. Claim to fame... right across from the Hofbrauhaus. An easy stumble home.

I intend to take my new BDG2M and investigate the new additions to the book. All in preparation for the ultimate trip come fall.... Oktoberfest 2005.

Prosit.

Two Separate Copies Of BDG2M Are On Order

Both Barley Man and I ordered our copies of The Beer Drinker's Guide to Munich, 5th Edition yesterday. After several emails with The Larry, it was determined that an order placed yesterday would arrive in my grubby little hands prior to my departure for Europe on Thursday. Yeee Ha ! ! ! Since I will be in Munich at the end of my trip, I wanted to be one of the first to anoint "The Book" with a visit to a new beer hall or two.

Keep your eyes posted here for pictures of the arrival. If I am lucky, maybe The Larry will even sign the book for me.
